ExcelCube was developed by three of us from the decision support software industry.

Our installations of consolidation and financial reporting software in large firms involved thousands of entities flowing into hundreds of levels of consolidations in several structures. Capabilities for exception reporting, currency conversion, journal entries and audit trails, security, and other accounting controls were typically required.

At all of our clients Excel was used for operations level work. Often we were asked to provide interfaces to and from Excel so users could work with input and consolidated data within Excel.

Where the financial and accounting controls were not needed, this method to provide data for work in Excel represented a six figure solution.

There had to be an easier, and cheaper, way and we couldn’t find one.

The idea was formed to provide a straightforward tool that added up entire spreadsheets across Excel files without an intermediate step or duplicating the all of the data in a database.

In our large decision support installations, we never used any kind of linking formulas to tie the rows and columns of entities together, as this would have been prohibitively complicated where more than a handful of spreadsheets were involved.

We viewed the thousands of accounts and columns for each entity as a single record and added them all together at one time. This is simpler and faster than any other approach, and it makes setting up and changing a consolidation easy.

It is this approach that we scaled down and adapted for Excel in our ExcelCube package.
